Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can reduce creosote buildup in your chimney.

Seasoned Firewood

Using seasoned firewood is crucial because it contains less moisture. Fresher wood has higher water content, leading to more smoke and creosote deposits. Look for logs that are at least six months to a year old.

Properly seasoned firewood is lighter and may have cracks or darker coloring at the ends. It burns more efficiently and produces less smoke, keeping your flue cleaner.

Hardwood vs. Softwood

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and birch are preferable for burning. They produce higher heat levels and less smoke, which reduces creosote accumulation over time.

Softwoods like pine may be cheaper, but they burn faster and produce more sap, leading to sticky creosote deposits in the flue. For a cleaner burn, choose hardwoods.

Proper Storage

Store firewood off the ground and covered, but not completely sealed, to allow airflow. This will help continue the drying process after cutting and splitting the wood.

Keeping your firewood dry is essential to avoid excess moisture, which leads to more smoke and creosote. Regularly checking your woodpile can ensure it's ready for optimal burning.
